Job Position – Postdoctoral Researcher

CAMPS is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join our interdisciplinary team at ETSAB–UPC in Barcelona.

How do we map long-term refugee settlements across the world, particularly where reliable spatial data is scarce? What can maps reveal about these settlements, their inhabitants and their transformation over time — and what remains invisible?

At CAMPS – Comparative Atlas of Long-term Refugee Settlements, a five-year ERC Starting Grant project, we’re developing a live, comparative atlas of long-term refugee settlements worldwide, combining remote sensing, GIS, cartography and situated socio-spatial research.

We are looking for an early-career researcher who can bridge advanced geospatial research with critical perspectives on the social, architectural and political dimensions of mapping.

We’re Hiring! Postdoctoral Researcher in Socio-Spatial Studies, Geospatial Analysis and Spatial Justice

About the position

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and coordination of the CAMPS atlas, working closely with our GIS specialists, PhD researchers and technical collaborators.

The role involves:

Mapping and atlas development: Coordinating mapping activities, spatial datasets and the interpretation of geospatial research outputs, particularly in contexts where reliable spatial information is limited.

Socio-spatial research: Connecting cartographic analysis with questions of spatial justice, infrastructure, settlement transformation and the limitations of remote observation.

Research communication and funding: Contributing to the CAMPS’ publications and other public-facing outputs, while identifying funding opportunities and developing grant proposals.

International collaboration: Supporting junior researchers and contributing to interdisciplinary research networks on forced displacement, spatial justice and global challenges.

Who are we looking for?

We welcome applications from early-career researchers in geography, urban studies, architecture, critical cartography, spatial planning and related disciplines.

We are particularly interested in candidates with:

– Strong expertise in GIS, cartography and spatial research, including experience working with incomplete or scarce geospatial data.

– A solid socio-spatial research background and an interest in the social, architectural and political implications of mapping.

– Excellent writing, communication and organisational skills.

– The ability to collaborate across disciplines, connecting technical geospatial work with broader research questions.

The position offers an opportunity to contribute to an ambitious international research project while developing experience in interdisciplinary research coordination, scientific communication and competitive funding proposals.
